Wonderful Weekend of Singing

The High School Vocal Competition was held Saturday, April 27, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior. The Tri-State College Vocal Competition occurred on Sunday, April 28, at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Kettering.   At Schuster Center 10th Anniversary Open House Nora Stang performs with an opera marionette for Polly Donovan, 18 months and her mother Tara of Huber Heights during the 10th Anniversary Open House at the Schuster Center in downtown Dayton, Saturday, March 2, 2013. The marionettes dressed as characters from famous operas are used by the Opera Guild of Dayton to ‘introduce young children to the magic of opera.’ (Thanks to activedayton.com.) **********************************************************************   What a Heartfelt Good Time!

Members and their guests who attended our annual Membership Luncheon on Thursday, February 14 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. truly experienced a heartfelt treat. The group met at Moraine Country Club at 4075 Southern Boulevard for a marvelous time of sharing, dining, learning and being entertained by the always fabulous Dayton Opera Artists-in-Residence. They gave a rousing performance of their new elementary school program Syd the Serpent Who Wanted to Sing. The Guild kicked off its  50th Anniversary year with a champagne toast. Carmens from Children’s Traveling Opera and Opera Marionettes Happy Golden Anniversary

Opera Guild of Dayton will kick off their 50th Anniversary year at the Membership Luncheon. Under the leadership of Chair Betty Holton, the Guild is planning a year full of wonderful events to celebrate this marvelous achievement. They include:

  • We begin the year of celebration with a Membership Luncheon on Thursday, February 14, 2013, at Moraine Country Club.  You and your friends are encouraged to attend to join in the fellowship, win great prizes, and hear the 2013 Dayton Opera Artists-in-Residence.
  •  Friday, April 5, 2013, Guild members will be invited to a pre-performance light supper in the donor lounge of the Schuster Center before The Marriage of Figaro.
  • Friday, September 6, 2013, past presidents of the Guild will be honored at a lovely tea at the Dayton Woman’s Club.
  • Saturday, November 23, 2013, we close this year of celebration with an elegant dinner at Moraine Country Club where we will listen to past winners of our College Vocal Competition and look back over our accomplishments of the past 50 years.
Plan to join the Guild for any or all the events.

BRAVO! Champagne Brunch and Fashion Show celebrated 25 years! Ponitz Center at Sinclair Community College was buzzing on October 12 at 10 a.m. as Elan of Kettering orchestrated the show which featured Oakwood’s own Althea Harper of Project Runway fame.

The annual High School and Tri-State College Vocal Competitions were held the weekend of April 28-29. The young performers entertained the enthusiastic live audiences.  The talent displayed by the young contestants was priceless.  Click on the 2012 Vocal Competitions tab at the left for more details.

The Annual Meeting of the Guild was held at Dayton Country Club on Wednesday, June 13. President Toni Winger reviewed the remarkable year that the Guild experienced and congratulated everyone on the hard work that resulted in significant contributions to the community and to Dayton Opera.

The Guild presented our BRAVO! Award to Kelly Haluschak for her tireless work as vice president of fundraising and countless other hours of dedication. The Friend of the Year Award was given to Walter Schaller of Dayton Country Club. He has created a refined and hospitable environment for our monthly meetings and many other activities including several Opera Balls.

The new members to the Board of Directors for the 2012-2014 term were announced. They included: Myrna Cunningham, Linda M. Davis, Tamra Francis, Donna Henry,Helen E. Jones-Kelley, Norva Loyd, Helen Miller, Kimberly Robinson and Tammy Schaff.
