2012 Vocal Competitions

 A Weekend of Singing

Warm up those vocal cords and practice your best songs. The 2012 Vocal Competitions are coming up in this spring. The High School Vocal Competition will be held on April 28 at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Oakwood. Young singers in the 11th and 12th grades from all over Ohio are invited to compete for cash prizes. Contact Linda Menz at 937/572-3594. The Tri-State College Vocal Competition will be April 29 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Kettering at 1:30 p.m . Any man (age 19-23) or woman (age 18-22) who attends a college in Ohio, Indiana or Kentucky or is a resident of those states and attends college elsewhere is eligible. Another highlight of the weekend is the Stars of Tomorrow Luncheon on Sunday, April 29. The luncheon will be held at the beautiful Moraine Country Club at 11:30 a.m. The cost is $30. Contact Laura Wilson at 937/304-3196 for reservations or additional information.

Previous winners have gone on to experience very successful musical careers. Elizabeth De Shong, college winner from 2001, has performed with the Metropolitan Opera, Chicago’s Lyric Opera, the Canadian Opera Company and more. Soprano Alyson Cambridge, winner from 2000, joined the Young Artists Development Program in 2003-2004, has sung with the Metropolitan Opera and a number of other prominent opera companies. 2011 Vocal Competitions

The annual High School Vocal Competition was held on Saturday, April 2, 2011, at Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Oakwood.  The event was organized by Chair Linda Menz.  Judges for the 2011 Competition were Joan Harrah, Kate McEwen of Wright State University and Dr. Jessica McCormack of Wittenberg College.  Winners were: 1st place - Cora Williams from New Paris, Ohio, a senior at National Trails High School; 2nd place - Scott Feyche of West Chester, Ohio, a junior at Lakota West High School; and 3rd place - Rachel Snyder, Dayton, Ohio, a senior at Stivers High School for the Performing Arts.  All three winners have been invited to perform at the Tri-State College Vocal Competition to be held on May 1, 2011.  The awards in the total amount of $1350 were being sponsored by the Norma J. Ross Youth Foundation and will be presented during the College Competition.

Tri-State College Vocal Competition

The annual Tri-State College Vocal Competition was held on May 1 at Kettering Seventh Day Adventist Church, corner of Stroop Road and Southern Blvd., Dayton, Ohio. The competition began at 1:30 p.m. The first place award 0f $2500 was won by countertenor Eric Jurenas and the second place award of $1500 as well as the Fran Michael Audience Favorite Award of $400 were won by soprano Julia Dawson.  Applicants were from the University of Cincinnati, Oberlin College, the University of Dayton, Bowling Green State University, The Ohio State University, the University of Kentucky, Miami University, Cedarville College and Northern Kentucky University. Six finalists were chosen in a preliminary judging from the CD samples which the vocalists submitted with their applications. The judges for this round were Mike Jaffe and Jamie Cordes.

The judges on May 1 were: Tom Bankston, general and artistic director of Dayton Opera; Eric Street, professor at the University of Dayton and Charles Parsons, critic-at-large in Cincinnati. The Stars of Tomorrow Luncheon immeditately preceded the Tri-State College Vocal Competition. For 2011, it was held at Moraine Country Club. A Social Time began at 11:30 a.m. Luncheon was served at noon. The cost of the luncheon was $30.

2011 High School Vocal Competition Awards

Opera Guild of Dayton is pleased to announce that the 2011 High School Vocal Competition Awards will be funded by a generous donation from the Norma J. Ross Youth Foundation. Norma was a leader in diversity and educational initiatives for the Guild for many years through her membership and Board of Directors activities. Norma’s creative ideas to bring opera to children in the greater Dayton community are deeply missed. The Guild is sincerely grateful for this donation in memory of Norma to help fulfill our mission to encourage young singers.

The 2011 High School Vocal Competition is scheduled for April 2 at Lutheran Church of Our Savior on Thruston Boulevard in Oakwood. Students in the 11th and 12th grades to are invited to participate for awards totaling $1350. The awards will be presented at the Tri-state College Vocal Competition on May 1 at the Seventh Day Adventist Church at the corner of Stroop Road and Southern Boulevard.
