From the orchestra’s first notes to the most spectacular mad scene in opera, Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor reveals chilling tragedy on a grand scale and will leave you breathless. Lucia just can’ take it any more when she is forced to give up the one she loves for an arranged marriage, setting into motion a frenzy of murder and madness. Based on an epic 19th century Scottish romance by Sir Walter Scott, this opera portrays a world where women are reluctant pawns in a struggle for powerful family alliances.

Celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the birth of Richard Wagner, Dayton Opera salutes one of the most radical and progressive composers of all time! Wagner’s style is uniquely complex and rich while his opera’s are among the most challenging and beloved in the repertory. This production, much like our recent acclaimed Fidelio, will feature a glorious selection of Wagner’s overtures, arias, and choruses, culminating in the completely staged Act I of his monumental Ring Cycle opera, Die Walküre.

His master, the Count, has his eyes on her as well, and a rebellion of classes ensues in a madcap frenzy of disguises, mistaken identities and amorous mayhem in the Almaviva household. Mozart’s delightful comedy of manners – The Marriage of Figaro – is a cherished opera favorite filled with his joyous and masterful music.
