Opera Basics
Every gathering place has its traditions, so here are some of ours! Remember to check out what’s happening before the performances—we often have pre-show entertainment and informative talks to help you have the best experience at Dayton Opera.

What to wear
When you attend Dayton Opera, you’ll see everything from tuxes to jeans, but most people wear something in between. In short, whether you want to dress up for a fancy night or wear something a little more casual, you’ll feel at home.

Don’t be late!
Because of safety concerns and to be courteous to other patrons, we do not allow seating after the performance has started. Be sure to allow enough time to park and find your seat. If you are late, you can always watch the performance in the lobby on flat panel monitors until ushers can seat you and appropriate time.

When to clap
Opera-goers show the love! If you haven’t been to an opera before, follow the crowd. They usually applaud after a great solo (aria) or chorus, or whenever the spirit moves them. You might even hear some impassioned “bravo’s” after an especially great aria.

Cell phones and pagers
For everyone’s sake, turn them off! If you are a professional on call, please check your phone or pager and register your seat location with the house manager before the performance. Leave this number for those who may need to reach you: 937.225.3503 X1.

Accessibility
The Schuster Center is a completely handicapped-accessible building. We also offer services like large-print programs and audio description for the visually impaired.
